Mission Statement: 

Pinewood is an independent college preparatory school dedicated to academic excellence and character development. Through the core values of risk, truth, and exploration, the School enriches community - locally and globally.

Dear Pinewood Families, 

Our school’s mission statement drives our actions and decisions. Although school is not in session, we see and hear the events and dialogue taking place around our country and in our local community - racism and injustice will never be tolerated by Pinewood Preparatory School.  

Our goal has been, and will always be, to cultivate a safe and healthy learning environment for all students and teachers. Our families choose Pinewood because they know we are committed to fulfilling our mission. We will always hold true to these guiding principles and care for all members of the Pinewood family, especially during challenging times. 

Pinewood students have supportive teachers, coaches, and mentors who cultivate independence and critical thinking in preparation for college and for life. Right now, they see a turbulent society wrestling with substantive issues of race, social justice, civility, and strife. If you are looking for resources and guidance on how to address these issues with your children, please do not hesitate to reach out to either of our school counselors - Brendan Diffley or Anna Bright. It is our collective responsibility to continuously improve and model a community built on respect. 

Some of you have asked about the School’s plans as they relate to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). As anyone who attended the State of the School assemblies can attest, we spoke candidly and transparently about all areas of our programming and operations. In fact, we shared insight into the five-year Strategic Plan, which was approved by the Board of Trustees at the beginning of May. Our plan sets forth action points, timelines, and responsibilities specific to this important DEI work. Our goals include the following:

  • Create an environment in which all feel visible, valued, and respected
  • Offer diversity and cultural competence training for existing faculty and staff
  • Gathering feedback from a cross-section of current families
  • Expanding reach in the faculty search process
  • Articulate a clear mission statement for DEI initiatives at Pinewood

Pinewood is committed to continuous improvement in all facets of our work--diversity, equity, and inclusion are no exception. We value the perspectives of every member of the school family and will need such insight if we are to make meaningful progress that will benefit our entire school family.
