CLASS NOTES

Students go Mining on the Pinewood Campus

The truck rolled onto campus and set up camp - but this was no ordinary truck. This was a place for students to learn about rocks, gems, crystals. K5 through 5th grade students participated with chants of "inner core, outer core, mantel, crust!" as they learned the layers of the earth. Some rocks had a smell, some were beautiful and all were interesting to each class as they visited the mobile mine. After a brief lesson, the class ventured into the "mine" where they sifted through sand and water to uncover beautiful stone. Special thanks to Ms. Frampton for coordinating the mining experience.

K5 went to the Strawberry Patch

The weather was fabulous!  The Pinewood K5 students ventured down the road from the Pinewood campus with their teachers and chaperons to Charpia Farms in Summerville.  Each class went at a different time to minimize the crowd.  The trip was planned to correlate with their unit on plant life cycles and insects.

Strawberry season has arrived - what to do with all those strawberries!

Strawberry Pie

1 baked pie crust
1 3 oz. package of strawberry
flavored Jello
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 1/2 cup boiling water
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1 pint fresh strawberries
whipped topping

Mix jello powder with the sugar. Add boiling water and stir until thoroughly dissolved. Add the lemon juice. Refrigerate until mixture starts to gel. Arrange strawberries on crust. Spoon thickened jello over the berries and refrigerate. Serve with whipped topping.

Strawberry Cheesecake

1  8 oz. pkg. cream cheese
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1/3 cup lemon juice
1 tsp. vanilla
2 cups sliced fresh strawberries
1/4 cup warmed honey

In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese until light and fluffy. Gradually blend in the sweetened condensed milk, then add the lemon juice and the vanilla. Pour the mixture into the prepared pie crust. Chill for 2 hours. Top with the strawberries. Drizzle the berries with the warmed honey. Excellent finish for your dinner!

* Recipes are from the Charpia Farms website.

French Fry One

Last week Carolyn Tomlinson, the recycling coordinator for Dorchester County, made a visit to Pinewood in order to speak with Mr. Newman’s AP Environmental Science class about fueling automobiles with vegetable oil.  Currently, Carolyn’s county transportation is a Chevy Suburban that has been converted to run on both diesel and vegetable oil.  It has cleverly been named “French Fry One”.  In addition to learning about how the vehicle worked, students were also able to view the inner workings of the newly modified Suburban.  Following are some of the questions that were addressed by Tomlinson.

How much does the fuel cost?
The fuel is absolutely free! We obtain used vegetable oil from the prison, filter it, and pump it into the Chevy.

How expensive was the conversion kit?
$1500.  However, we save nearly $100 per week on fuel costs.  Therefore, the kit pays for itself in less than a year, as long as you have a reliable source of vegetable oil.  Restaurants are usually more than willing to give it away for free.

How many mpg does the truck get on vegetable oil?
The Suburban gets 12 mpg on vegetable oil, which is the same gas mileage it achieves with diesel.

How is this vehicle different than one that runs on biodiesel?
Biodiesel is a fuel blend.  French Fry One either runs on pure diesel fuel or pure vegetable oil, rather than a fuel blend.  There is a toggle switch on the dashboard to switch between the two fuel types.

How do the emissions from this vehicle compare to those from a standard diesel vehicle?
Vegetable oil burned as fuel does not emit sulfur dioxide (SO2), a main compound in diesel responsible for acid rain. In addition to this 100% reduction in SO2, recycled vegetable oil fuel produces 78% less carbon dioxide (CO2), the dominant greenhouse gas responsible for global warming, 48% less carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas, 48% less asthma-causing particulate matter, and 80% less cancer-causing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH’s) than petroleum diesel.  Furthermore, rather than putting out the foul smelling smoke emitted by many diesel powered vehicles, veggie powered emissions smell like french fries, Chinese food, and popcorn!

First Grade Hits the Beach

The Pinewood 1st grade went to Newton Farms, an Extraordinary Market, and Beachwalker County Park for a field trip about Oceans on May 5th, a beautiful day for exploring. They started out with a tour of the upscale grocery store, where a parent, David Lallement works as the produce manager. The children got to taste fresh squeezed orange juice, view the seafood department where they learned about the different offerings in the case, and hear about the general operations of the store. Parents enjoyed the salad bar and took advantage of the unique foods not found anywhere else in the Lowcountry.

From there the group travelled to Kiawah Island's Beachwalker Park where they participated in two programs offered by Charleston County. The students learned what a barrier island is, and built their own in the sand. The other program let students dig in the surf with shovels and strainers to see what creatures could be found. Mattison Matthews found a whelk shell with the whelk inside! Abi Walker unearthed a sea cucumber. Stella Lallement caught a fish. Caroline Byrd found a small piece of driftwood and all of the students touched a jellyfish found earlier on the beach.

As we walked off the beach, the 1st graders were treated to a fabulous lunch compliments of David Lallement and Newton Farms Market. The students, teachers and chaperons had worked up an appetite for the ham and turkey wraps, PB&J's and fresh fruit. Special thanks to David and Newton Farms for making the extraordinary day special.

AT THE CORNER OF SERVICE & COMPASSION

Working with our Community Service Director, Mrs. Lori Herman, Aris Hanchard, Jerod Brooks, Travis Faith and Margaret Graham submit a weekly story that focuses on the Community Service Program at Pinewood.

Reflections on Community Service from Lower School Students

Although community service is not required of our Lower School students, several of them have worked on projects throughout the course of the school year.  Here are some of their reflections on the work they have done:

Nathan Greenslit, 3rd Grade – He helped find new turtle nests and marked turtles as well as assisted with stranded hatchlings.
~ “This project was really fun.  I loved seeing the turtles in the hands of the people helping.  You should try it.  I learned a lot about loggerhead turtles and how to protect them.”

Amelia Clower, 5th Grade – She assisted a disabled neighbor with routine daily tasks after surgery.
~ “I learned a lot from helping out a disabled person.  They can do the same things we can, but they just need a little help.  I really feel good when I see her walking now because I know I helped when she needed it the most.”

Justin Lawlor, 4th Grade – He was involved in a beach sweep and a river sweep.
~ “I loved picking up the trash and felt good about helping.  I found so many interesting things and made the beach look better.”

TURN IN YOUR HOURS!

In the last two issues of the POST, I have discussed awards and in previous issues, I have talked about community service requirements.  The Community Service Program at Pinewood is a REQUIREMENT for all middle school and high school students.  Middle school students are required to complete 5 hours of community service, and 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students are required to complete 10 hours of community service.  Our seniors are required to complete 30 hours of community service.

Service hour totals for 6th through 11th grade can be checked on the community service website.

Seniors should check with Mrs. Herman and have already been talking to Mrs. Herman about their hours.  I am currently talking with all seniors about their service requirement.

Pinewood is very proud of the Community Service Program and the impact it has on our students and the community.  It is important for all of the Pinewood family to understand that the Pinewood Handbook states the following for failure to meet the Community Service Learning requirement:

SENIORS: FAILURE TO MEET THE COMMUNITY SERVICE HOUR REQUIREMENT WILL RESULT IN THE WITHHOLDING OF YOUR DIPLOMA. YOU MUST COMPLETE THE COMMUNITY SERVICE
REQUIREMENT IN ORDER TO GRADUATE.

If a rising 7th, 8th, freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior student fails to complete his/her service hour requirement, he/she will be expected to report to Pinewood during the summer for the Summer Service Program. This week long Summer Service Program will be scheduled at the discretion of the Community Service Coordinator. Failure to attend this program could jeopardize enrollment for the following school year. Any rising senior involved in the Summer Service Program WILL NOT be granted senior privileges until after the first nine week grading period of his/her senior year.  Students will also have their grades withheld UNTIL they complete the
required hours of community service.

If you have already performed your community service but have not turned in your hours, please do so immediately.  Use this link for the community service form. If you do NOT have the required hours, please see Mrs. Herman for ideas and suggestions as to how you can meet your requirement.  I am always here to help any of our students find ways to meet his/her requirement.  If you have any questions about the program, please visit our website from the STUDENT LIFE section of the Pinewood site or email me at lherman@pinewoodprep.com.

The Bands Battled in the S.C. Sunshine

The stage was set, the Battle logo was hung and the judges from Pinewood, The Guitar Center and 98X radio were poised at the ready to hear the talent that Pinewood had to offer. . Pinewood's 2nd Annual Battle of the Bands took place on Monday, May 5th in the field behind the Drummond House and highlighted two of Pinewood's unique electives - Music Tech and Advanced Marketing.  The Music Tech class performs original songs and the Advanced Marketing class planned the event.

Ms. Herman noted, “No one truly knows how much work goes into an event like Battle of the Bands.  Over 30 students from two different electives come together to plan and execute the show.  The students learn valuable lessons that will benefit them as they continue to find themselves.  I have never been more proud of a group of students than I was today.  This event took close to three months to plan and today, without complaint, they worked from the early morning until the afternoon to showcase the incredible musical talent we have at Pinewood.  A standing ovation to the Advanced Marketing and Music Tech classes.......well done and rock on!”

Congratulations to Clay Graham, Kimo Rabang, Gunnar Henderson and Stephen Lowe.  Their song “Red Bike” that they wrote, recorded and mixed this year in the Music Tech class has been played on Charleston’s rock radio station “98X” at least twice since the Battle of the Bands!

Champions of the Environment

For over a decade, Pinewood middle school students have been participating in the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control’s annual Champions of the Environment contest.  This year was no exception.  A number of students from Mr. Newman’s, Mr. Hemingway’s, Mrs. Horn’s, Mrs. Martin’s, and Mrs. McIntosh’s classes  submitted entries in the poster, essay, and photo divisions.  Overall, DHEC received a total of nearly 1000 entries from 39 middle-schools from throughout the state.

At Thursday’s award ceremony in Columbia, it was announced that 6th grader Jason Wilson placed 3rd in the state in the essay division, while 7th grader Natalie Mann placed 3rd in the state in the poster division.  Both students received a $100 savings bond for their efforts.  In addition, 6th grader Kayce Hopper received an honorable mention for her essay.  It is an incredible achievement that these three students claimed 3 of the top 11 prizes awarded statewide! Pinewood was the only school in the state to have 2 students place in the top three.  Nice work!!!!!

Environmentally Friendly Poster Contest Winners

Last week judging was held for two conservation contests sponsored by the Ecology Club and the Stagliano family.  The contests were the brainchild of Katie Stagliano, an environmentally conscious 3rd grader currently attending Pinewood.  For the first contest, students developed a flyer promoting energy conservation in the classroom.  These flyers were designed to easily fit above light switches in classrooms throughout the school.  28 lower school students submitted flyers, while 87 upper school students submitted flyers.  For the second contest, students designed posters promoting water conservation.  Posters were submitted by 23 upper school students and 19 lower school students.

Eleven faculty judges worked for 3 afternoons to finally determine the winning entries.  After the dust settled, the results were as follows:

Lower School Energy Conservation Flyer
1st place: Elizabeth Anne Stephens (4th grade)
2nd place: Cody Bazzle (4th grade)

Lower School Water Conservation Poster
1st place: Katharina Bottler (4th grade)
2nd place: Kayla Westbury (5th grade)
2nd place: Mary Lesesne McIntosh (4th grade)

Upper School Energy Conservation Flyer
1st place: Jacob Cumbie (9th grade)
2nd place: Min Kim (11th grade)

Upper School Water Conservation Poster
1st place: Bradley Bilsback (9th grade)
2nd place: Kelly Hinson (10th grade)
2nd place: Dane Rabang (10th grade)

All of the first place winners will be receiving a check for $40, while all of the second place finishers will be receiving a check for $20.   In addition, the winning entries will be on display throughout school next year, serving as a constant reminder to conserve water and electricity on campus.  Special thanks go out to all students who participated.  Your efforts will help to make Pinewood a more environmentally conscious school in the months to come!

Each week we will feature a conservation tip provided by a member of the Pinewood family:

contributed by Katie Stagliano, grade 3

PINEWOOD HIGHLIGHTS

"Never Saw Another Butterfly" a Success in More Ways Than One

The Pinewood Drama Department provided audiences on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with a moving performance of the dramatic account of a young girl working to survive and live during the Holocaust. It was a dramatic story of pain, sorrow, love and survival. The cast and Ms. Horn will be donating half the admission proceeds to the Holocaust Museum, a donation totaling $600.

What made the evening at Friday's performance even more special was having a very special woman in the audience. After simply calling to check on performance times, Dientje Kalisky Adkins found herself an honored guest for the evening and was presented with a peace lilly by the cast. After sharing brief words about her experience as a childhood Holocaust survivor, a dry eye was hard to come by. She praised the cast for their efforts with this production and was so moved that she plans to come back to Pinewood to share her story.

Ms. Adkins was a young girl in Nazi-occupied Holland. She was a Jewish child in Bussum, Netherlands, when Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany and her parents sent her into hiding. A native of the Netherlands, she survived as a young Jewish girl hidden in a tiny closet of a rather unkind Catholic nun. Despite hunger and abuse, Kalisky Adkins managed to survive due to her will to live and friendship with her only true companion, a little doll named Annika Pope.

"It's very hard for me to tell my story," said Adkins, who also hid in a forest and suffered abuse in her effort to escape the Nazis. "What is the best therapy for me? Going to schools and talking about it with young people." Pinewood is pleased that this dramatic performance has helped to build a relationship with this very special woman.

"The Teacher's Pet"

Mrs. Gardner’s pet family includes Stella, a 9 year old bullmastiff, Hercules, a five year old mixed breed, Deacon, a three year old Brussels griffon, and an eight year old cat named Ms. Bea. With such a big pet family there is never a dull moment in the house. The smallest dog, Deacon, runs the house and is definitely the “Top Dog.” Mrs. Gardner said her pets are a lot like her family, different in size, personalities and in what they like to do. Stella likes to sleep. Hercules likes to run and chase balls, and Deacon likes to be wherever Mrs. Gardner happens to be. The cat watches over everything from her perch on top of a recliner. Mrs. Gardner said, “I love every one of them, and all of them bring something different to our family. I can’t imagine not having lots of pets because they just want someone to take care of them, play with them and love them.”

Spring Sports

Last year the Pinewood boys tennis team staged a miracle comeback in the state finals.  After falling behind in the singles 4-2 the Panthers rallied to win all three doubles matches to capture the state championship.  After Tuesday’s single’s matches the Panthers found themselves in a similar situation against Hilton Head Prep.  Trailing, again 4-2 the Panthers were looking for their second miracle, but it wasn’t to happen as the Dolphins won two of the three doubles matches to defeat the Panthers 6-3.

Early on the match went pretty much as Pinewood coach Heinz Maurer expected.  “Their 1 and 2 players are excellent and I knew we would have a hard time against them,” he said.  “They are young, but very good, and if they continue to progress they will both probably play at division one schools in college.”  Nicky Kunz playing in the #1 spot for the Dolphins dispatched Pinewood’s Josh Klingenberg 6-2, 6-1 and Mo Hookaylo defeated Panther #2 Scott Hayes 6-1, 6-2.  Maurer knew that the Panthers need to split the singles and even after dropping the first two matches he felt fairly confident.  “We have a little more depth than they do so I knew we could do well in the lower singles,” he said.  Well is what the Panthers did do, Adam Elliget playing at the number 5 spot defeated Franklyn Bakala 6-1, 6-3 and William Wert, playing #6 won his match over Jarrett Nixon 6-0, 6-1.  That left the two middle matches to be decided.  In the #3 spot Jacob Cumbie put up a terrific fight, but ultimately fell to Hunter Mitchell 6-3, 6-4.  It was at the number 4 spot that Maurer had hopes of splitting the singles.  JT Elliget dropped the first set but rebounded to take the second set off of the Dolphins Joey Ryan setting up a deciding tie breaker.  After splitting the first four points Elliget ran of six straight to give himself an 8-2 and things looked good for the Panthers, but Ryan rallied to win the seven of the next eight to even the tie break at 9 all.  After trading points Ryan won the final two to capture the tie break 12-10 and give the Dolphins an almost insurmountable lead of 4-2.  As expected the Dolphins number one team of Kunz and Hookaylo defeated Klingenberg and Ladson Fishburne 6-2, 6-2 for the deciding fifth point.  Mitchell and Ryan defeated JT Elliget and Cumbie 6-1, 3-2 ret, but Adam Elliget and Scott Hayes were able to win the final doubles 6-3, 6-3.  With the win Adam Elliget completed an undefeated season in both singles and doubles.

In girls soccer the Panthers dropped a close 4-3 decision to Hammond in overtime on Tuesday evening.  The Panthers rallied to tie three times but were unable to ever gain a lead.  Kimrey Angotti Smith and Courtney Angotti Smith scored early for the Panthers.  Megan Fish scored with about 10 minutes remaining in regulation time off a beautiful header after receiving a cross from Courtney Angotti Smith.  Smith took the ball down the left sideline and lofted a perfect pass to Fish who was left unguarded about 15 yards from the goal where she deftly directed the ball into the upper corner to knot the game a three all.  In the overtime the Panthers seemed to run out of steam as the Skyhawks dominated the first 8 minutes and were able to score on a scramble in front of the Panthers net.  The Panthers did get several more good chances late in the second overtime but were unable to cash in.  The loss ends the Panthers season with a record of 16-3.

In softball the Lady Panthers dropped a game to Northwoods 2-1 on Friday ending any hopes of securing their first region championship.  The came was scoreless until the 5th innings when the Chargers were able to push across two runs.  The Lady Panthers responded in the top of the 7th as they were able to get one run across, and threatened to score more, but the Lady Chargers settled down after a couple of errors and were able to get the final out.  The Lady Panthers are 22-3 and played their final regular season home game on Monday.  Next Friday and Saturday the Lady Panthers will compete in the SCISA state tournament in Lexington.

Connor Every-Andrews

This was the first season for Pinewood 10th grader, Connor Every-Andrews' Junior C Team and they made their mark. Part of the Southeast Junior Hockey League, the team made it into the finals, a move that surprised a lot of people and surprised even more when they skated away with second place in the entire tournament. "We made it there and we were just thrilled to be there." commented Connor. Little did anyone expect that Connor's team would go on to be as successful as they were. After only one year, the team will become a Junior B team due to their accomplishments.

Connor's goal is to play hockey in college. He plays center and left-wing and his dream would be to play for Boston College. This summer Connor will be training twice a week with Stingrays' captain Cail MacLean with a select group of 15 people ages 16 to 21 doing drills and mini-games. As Connor noted, "Hockey will always be a part of my life, I will always play."

WHAT IS A PINEWOOD ALUMNUS

The question has come up about what makes someone a Pinewood Alumnus. Great question - a Pinewood Alumnus is someone who attended Pinewood for at least one year, they may have graduated from Pinewood but they need not have graduated from the school they may have attended when the school was formed and did not go until 12th grade.
They are all part of the Alumni family.

So are you a Pinewood Alumnus?
Let us know and share your stories and fondest memories of Pinewood with us! KMcMullen@pinewoodprep.com

Thank you to all the alumni that have been in touch!

We look forward to having you as part of the Pinewood Alumni Family.
