Pinewood Preparatory School

Middle and High School Music

Pinewood Preparatory School offers many music classes and ensembles for our middle and high school students.

All students in 7th grade take a nine week general music course. This course is based on the National Association for Music Education 9 National Music Standards. Highlights in this course including being a part of a percussive ensemble, playing hand bells in an ensemble, and creating parts of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

Glee Club and Drum Line are fun enrichment courses for middle school students that meet once a week. In Glee Club, students learn proper vocal technique, how to read music as a vocalist, and singing harmony while dancing to modern pop and Broadway music. The Glee Club performs some of these songs at the Winter Crescendo Concert and the Spring Pops Concert. In Drum Line, students learn and practice the 26 standard snare drum rudiments, learn how to read and perform drum line cadences, and proper drumming technique. Our drum line is complete with snares, toms, bass drums and cymbals.  The Drum Line performs at all home football games and many other school events.

High school students may elect to take Chorus, Piano, Guitar, Band, and Music Technology.

In the Chorus ensemble, students learn proper singing technique, sight reading (solmization), singing in harmony, singing a capella and the many other skills that being in a choral ensemble require. They sing a variety of music from early chausons to jazz and other modern songs. Audiences have the opportunity to hear the high school choir sing at one of their three concerts throughout the year or at on the radio during the holiday season.

Guitar students learn how to play, compose, and improvise guitar music. Both classical and modern techniques are taught. Piano students learn to play on full, weighted keyboards. Both guitar students and piano students learn a variety of music, the science behind music, and music history.

Music Technology students collaborate on various musical projects; record, mix and produce these projects and release a CD that they present on stage in the community, in various school functions, and in the annual music festival PineWoodstock. The Music Technology class also hosts a yearly songwriting contest for the local community.

In addition to music technology, middle and high school musicals, handbells, drumline, and the classes mentioned above Pinewood Preparatory School offers many musical experiences to enrich our students’ education.
